Day Four of BT Infinity 2, BT Phone and Sky+HD with Entertainment Extra+ and Sky Movies HD

BT continue to annoy me, unfortunately.

I’m still waiting for Caller Display to be activated and it’s been a good couple of days now. I dread thinking that I may have to go back through what I call the Voice Recognition Menu System From Hell (VRMSFH) to speak to somebody about this order. And what I can only assume is the line retraining has knocked off internet access at the most inconvenient times – twice while I’ve been working on an on-call alert for work (one at 1am, the other at 5am).

It’s fair to say that perhaps I shouldn’t be using a new broadband connection during the week I’m on-call – but thankfully I still have the Virgin Media connection up and running alongside and I can move back over to that should there be any further issues.

Sky, on the other hand, is working beautifully. No problems with the service or billing. No fuss whatsoever. The only reason I didn’t pick Sky Broadband and Sky Talk was (a) Sky’s router is inferior in terms of specs, (b) the system thought I would only get 40Mbs.

Using Sky’s iOS apps for the iPhone and iPad, I like being able to remotely download movies alongside catch-up TV and “box sets” to the Sky+HD box and have everything ready for me to watch when I get home. The ability to remotely schedule recordings and series is fantastic too – and so much simpler than Virgin’s own Tivo app.

Speaking of apps, the new iOS apps that have were updated a day or so ago make finding new programmes and movies to watch that much more easier. This is a bad thing because I already have so much on my “to watch” list on Sky, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video that I’ll never realistically get around to watching everything.

Sky Go on the iPad works very well indeed. I’ve tested the streaming capability from the wireless connection in the shuttle bus service between Guildford and my place of work and apart from a small drop out mid-way (which has terrible mobile reception), it Just Works(tm). Good quality streaming too.

My overall experience with Sky – from installation to the billing to using the service has been mightily impressive. While I appreciate that not everybody is going to be able to have a satellite dish installed at home due to whatever restrictions that may be in place, Sky’s satellite TV service is THE best way of watching TV.

Sky’s internet-only TV service, NOW TV, is now a good quality VoD provider after a long and bloody battle since inception, but the experience is lacking in comparison to what I’m getting with the satellite service.

Sky’s TV service is, obviously, a quite a bit more expensive than NOW TV’s Movies and Entertainment passes combined, but this is reflected in the service and equipment. Downloading content to the SkyHD+ box and, with Sky Go Extra, to an iOS device, makes the experience a much nicer one. I don’t have to faff around with wireless settings or anything just to watch TV. And as I get older, I like simplicity.
