New Stargate film trilogy with Emmerich and Devlin back in the driving seat

According to Deadline Hollywood:

MGM’s Gary Barber called Emmerich and Devlin “world-class creators of the original Stargate,” and said they will “bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations.”

Given that MGM never credited them anywhere on the Stargate SG-1 television franchise for their work on the original motion picture[1], I find MGM’s attitude somewhat odd (although different people at the helm of these big studios leads to different attitudes over time: also remember that both the film and TV series all happened prior to MGM’s bankruptcy).

As I’ve mentioned here before, in my limited (and now irrecoverable) correspondence with Centropolis Entertainment prior to SG-1 launching[2], Devlin appeared to be extremely pissed at MGM for producing the television series and urged that I did not watch.

In any event, I’m rather excited by this news.

People must remember that Stargate SG-1 was a re-imagining (not quite a full reboot) of the Stargate film universe – so anybody declaring the new film trilogy as being unoriginal and “does Hollywood not have any more original ideas” needs to stop and look at that aspect first.

[1] Although the film’s original composer, David Arnold, did get a mention as Stargate SG-1 used  his work for the basis of the show’s theme music.

[2] I wanted to know if David Arnold was returning to score the music because the Stargate film soundtrack was perhaps the best damn OST I’d ever come across at the time.
