The Power of Love

Last night I came home around 17:30 to find that most of the houses along my street were in complete darkness. We had suffered a power cut.

It turns out, having called the UK PowerNet, that a fault had been found at the local substation – a fuse had blown. The outage started around 16:35. I was quite concerned about the fridge freezer and all the food held within, but thankfully UK PowerNet had estimated a fix time for around 19:30, so assuming that time was reasonably accurate I wouldn’t have to worry. I also have home and contents insurance, so if the worst did happen, I’d put in a claim for compensation to have all the damaged food replaced.

Using the iPhone as a torch (thanks iOS 7), I found the candles left over from last Christmas and lit them. If it was not for the lack of power, the scene in the living room would be one of serenity and peace. The laptop had 4 hours of juice left, and I tethered my iPhone to it for good 3G internet connectivity. This was slumming it 21st Century style – especially as I had ordered a pizza (heck, if I couldn’t cook I wasn’t going to go hungry).

And then I go and stick my foot in it.

I texted my lady friend to tell her what was happening, but instead of writing “have lit the candles in the living room”, iOS decided it would be more appropriate to change that to “have lit the candles in the loving room”. I only spotted the error after sending the text. I quickly sent another text to apologise. I’d never laughed or gone as red as I have in many a year. Thankfully she saw the funny side (I hope). I didn’t want to come across as a Cassanova-inspired lothario who keeps a room specifically for, well, loving.

Thankfully I didn’t have to wait too long before the power was restored – everything was back on by 19:00 and I’ve thankfully not had any other outages since.
