Divorce anniversary

Today is the first anniversary of my decree nisi.

It’s been a strange year all told.  I’ve dated a bit. But more often than not I’ve been too bloomin’ knackered to do much else after work other than collapse in front of the TV or sleep.  It’s been pretty much been about work, TV and sleep, in fact.

Which is why I’m taking immediate steps to address the balance.  I’m meeting up with old school chums next week in London, for example.

But I’m also getting back into creative writing again (seriously!) after just over a year long absence, and I’ve recently met somebody who shares the same passion for writing as I do.  We bounce ideas off each other and support each other.  Somebody who shares a love of science fiction,  technology, reading, travelling and learning.

I’m hoping to take a trip out to the States early next year to meet my new friend, but in the mean time we’ve been chatting away like busy things by phone, face-to-face via Google Hangout, and texting and emailing as one does.

It’s remarkable to think that we’ve come this far technology wise.  I remember being six years old and my dad bringing home a ZX81 computer.  I thought that you could ask the computer anything (what’s the highest mountain in the world) and it’ll respond.  A little thing called BASIC and a complete lack of network connectivity brought me back to reality.  But today?  “Siri – what’s the highest mountain in the world?”  Marvellous.

And to think that I’m here on a tiny little island being able to communicate with another human being many thousands of miles away instantly is quite frankly superb.

If only technology could fix time zones.  So hurry up with that Star Trek transporter system (or Asgard transporter system, or the Goa’uld ring transportation system – take your pick).
